The Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts at Howard University invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Music. The Chair’s initial appointment is three years with a reduced course-load, at the faculty rank of Associate or Full Professor with tenure. The successful candidate may be reappointed for a second three-year term as Department Chair. The desired starting date is August 16, 2022, pending final budget approval.
The Department of Music seeks a dynamic, energetic leader with the ability to effectively engage faculty, staff, students, and external constituencies in a collegial and collaborative manner. The candidate will have record of excellence in teaching, academic leadership, faculty development, fundraising, and financial management. Salary and rank commensurate with education and experience.
The Chair represents the department as part of the college’s leadership team and is responsible for faculty and staff recruiting, development, retention, resource attainment, financial management, and stakeholder relationship management and in addition, serves as the department’s executive to the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). Working in partnership with the senior administration of the College of Fine Arts, the successful candidate will be expected to embrace and contribute to the mission of the University.
The Chair must be a creative intellectual leader, adept at building and supporting multi-disciplinary partnerships within a diverse community, knowledgeable in higher education issues, collaborative in developing team-focused, data-driven approaches to problem solving, and possess strong interpersonal skills.
