The Director of the Precollege supports and engages with highly talented students (approximately 475) as well as their parents and dedicated faculty as they deliver a comprehensive music curriculum during a 30-week academic year. The Director oversees implementation of the School’s strategic planning as it relates to the enrollment and administration of Manhattan School of Music’s renowned Precollege Division. The Director continuously evaluates the effectiveness of the curriculum and hiring of faculty. The Director works collaboratively with the Executive Vice President and Provost, as well as other members of MSM leadership, to purposefully connect the vision and mission of Precollege to the larger strategic goals of MSM, including a deepening and expanding role of recruiting and matriculating students from the local and regional area and from the MSM Summer Program. Additionally, the Director fosters an environment that prepares Precollege students to apply and matriculate to the MSM College.

Domains:

Administrative and Financial

▪Direct and manage the Precollege Division of Manhattan School of Music, a Saturday school for musically talented students, ages 5-18. Supervise day-to-day office operations and three full-time staff members.
▪Oversee the development of educational programs that represent the goals and philosophy of MSM, including the Cultural Inclusion Initiative; promote a positive, welcoming, and creative educational environment.

▪Establish and implement all policies and procedures for the Precollege Division pertinent to the effective management of the Division including student/teacher assignments, performance requirements, faculty responsibilities, and professional conduct.

▪Strategically allocate financial aid, and determine scholarship recipients to ensure a balanced enrollment and educational access for qualified students with demonstrated financial need.

▪Recruit and hire new faculty as needed. Develop work relationships with faculty, and gain an understanding of individual teaching styles and abilities.

▪ Responsible for an annual budget of approximately $5,000,000.

▪ Consult with the Vice President for Administration and Human Relations regarding training, student concerns, and compliance.

▪ Oversee and approve the assignment of performance and recital times and planning of all events including graduation, award ceremonies, and major ensemble concerts.

▪ Direct assignment of students’ coursework, including lesson/studio and ensemble assignment for approximately 475 students who all receive instruction within a 10-hour period on Saturdays.

▪ Responsible for ensuring accurate and up-to-date record keeping on students including attendance, transcripts, and personal information.

▪ Oversee payroll hours for faculty on a semester basis and pay adjustments to faculty.

▪ Work with the Bursar’s Office regarding billing procedures and tuition payments.

▪ Develop staff in terms of cross-training and career development.

▪ Perform ad hoc special projects assigned by senior management.

Educational Development and Student and Faculty Relations

▪ Supervise the auditions of new students, assessing the quality of their talent and potential while balancing departmental and ensemble needs.

▪ Assign students to teachers and ensembles based on the results of auditions and knowledge of teaching styles, for those students who have not made a faculty request.

▪ Evaluate student performances via weekly attendance and recitals, thereby acquiring an understanding and familiarity with each individual student.

▪ Counsel students regarding career choices and college requirements, and write detailed and realistic recommendations.

▪ Develop curricula in coordination with faculty members.

▪ Ensure enforcement and compliance with the Precollege Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Parent Relations

▪ Steward Precollege relationship with Parents Association, and assist with activities in accordance to its mission.

▪ Consult with and advise parents pertinent to student programs, problems, financial concerns, teacher issues, attendance, and other matters.
External Relations

▪ Work with the Vice President for Advancement to identify and solicit individual donors to the Precollege Division.

▪ Attend special events, including internal and external functions on behalf of the Precollege Divisions.

▪ Collaborate with the Vice President for Advancement to identify corporations, foundations, and organizations for the purpose of supporting the Precollege Division.

Job Requirements:

▪ Experienced professional musician, educator, and administrator with a proven track record in each area.

▪ Experience with K-12 music curriculum and students, including understanding of age appropriate issues and learning abilities.

▪ The ability to work independently, to express initiative and a high priority on accomplishment.

▪ Excellent inter-personal skills with all constituencies: faculty, students, staff, and parents. Communication and public speaking skills.

▪ Excellent organizational and management.

▪ Computer literacy required, including skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access, as well as additional databases and platforms unique to MSM.

▪ Knowledge of and experience with teaching methods for young students.

▪ Well-developed contacts within the professional music and educational communities.

▪ Problem solving skills with the ability to understand differing viewpoints and resolve conflicts.

▪ Ability to adhere to a high level of confidentiality and professionalism.
