This full-time faculty director position is responsible for teaching, and for supporting the Director of Music in planning, implementing, and designing the band programs; overseeing the marching band percussion section including instruction, arranging, equipment maintenance, and recruiting; co-coordinating music recruiting events; directing the Pep Band, and teaching courses in music. Responsibilities for this open rank 10-month position include summer band camp, off-campus, evening and weekend duties, student recruitment, retention, and placement efforts.
Essential Functions:Instructional ActivityTeach fall and spring band percussion courses, plus assigned general education contact hours (commensurate with rank) in Music per year and assist with all other band course sections.Teaching responsibilities include time spent in face-to-face or online courses and in immediate preparation for them; maintaining and improving competence in subjects taught; incorporating inclusive teaching practices; preparing and updating teaching materials and courses; conferring with students on course materials; developing and evaluating assignments and examinations or presentations. Professional peer review is an essential feature of effective teaching. Stevenson University uses the Blackboard course management system.Faculty responsibilities include writing syllabi, reading, and responding to emails, grading course work, submitting mid-term and final grades, and alerting appropriate university personnel to student problems on a timely basis.Participate in the assessment activities of the program, Schools, and University.Engage in continuing professional development related to the field and pedagogical best practices.Collegiality, as well as professional and ethical conduct, enhances teaching, learning and the general reputation of all persons in the academy. Therefore, all faculty members are expected to serve in a collegial fashion and in accordance with professional and ethical principles when dealing with other faculty members, students, administrators, and members of the public. Follow all faculty and program policies outlined by the School and the University.Cooperative extension includes identifying current needs, adapting professional practice and/or research into contemporary language, presenting information and education to various constituents, providing leadership in identifying and presenting cutting-edge technology in their discipline, developing interdisciplinary approaches to problem solving, and collaborating with faculty to stay current in the field.Attend all faculty, staff, University, Music, and School of Design meetings.Attend all commencement exercises.Leadership and Service ActivityActively support the Director of Music with setting and achieving strategic goals for band programs, including supporting the planning and implementation of new and existing programs, and all aspects of the band including but not limited to:Assisting with overall band budget management, including making recommendations for purchases, and anticipating and planning for budget and contingency expenses.Clerical and logistics operations/schedule for the Stevenson University Band program.Coordinate maintenance of athletic band equipment truck, including fueling.Plan, and manage band banquet and awards.Compose and arrange front ensemble and battery percussion compositions/arrangements.Facilitate and supervise student leadership team.Maintain and coordinate all aspects of the music programs electronic audio design and equipment.Manage all percussion equipment including securing and maintaining inventories, maintaining and repairing equipment.Recruit students for the music program; communicate with prospects regularly, and engage actively in all other aspects of recruitment.Engage and participate in the life and work of the department, school, and university includes attending department meetings; participating in Open Houses and recruiting efforts; and attending and participating in planning and coordination of departmental events.Supervise student equipment crew when loading and unloading equipment.
