Summary of Primary Functions:  
Responsible for managing the overall symphony artistic program, which includes planning the orchestra’s annual Masterworks concerts in conjunction with the Music Director and all other series during the winter season from September to May.  Plan the Deer Valley Music Festival each summer and all other special orchestral performances, tours, and run-outs. Develop the rehearsal and concert schedule, engage all needed guest artists/conductors, and manage Artistic budget for organization. Liaise with Music Director, Administration, and Executive Office. Assume additional responsibilities and perform special projects as needed or directed.

Report to:  Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer
Supervise: Associate Conductor, Symphony Chorus Director, Artist Logistics Coordinator, Executive Assistant to the Music Director and Symphony Chorus Manager, Music Library staff

Essential Responsibilities:
Artistic Planning
·       Work to create artistic and exciting programs that engage listeners, align with institutional goals, encourage the support of donors, invigorate our community, and set the USUO apart from other institutions.
·       Develop, coordinate, and communicate programming for all Symphony concerts.
·       Keep abreast of existing and emerging artistic talent and repertoire; make recommendations for performances.
·       Manage and direct all artistic budgets and timelines for implementation and execution. Work with Sr. VP & COO to create annual budget projections.
·       Work with COO and Director of Operations, Orchestra Personnel Manager, and Education Manager to create annual orchestra season calendar.
·       Manage, produce, and execute all guest artist contracts.  Work with Director of Operations to review and process Pops riders, special productions, and symphony staged events and other artistic elements.
·       Work with COO and Director of Operations to ensure that all contractual logistics are met for all guest artists, Music Director, and all other conductors.
·       Gain a working knowledge of the orchestra’s contractual bargaining agreement with the American Federation of Musicians.
·       Manage implementation of artistic plans by coordinating with the orchestra library, orchestra personnel office, program annotators/publishers, local radio broadcast producers.
·       Manage pre-concert lecture series and engage speakers as necessary.
·       Coordinate with the Opera Artistic Director on vocal works, i.e., opera and oratorio concerts.
·       Plan and coordinate extensive run-out series with local presenters, i.e., Onstage Ogden, The Noorda at UVU, etc.
·       Serve as staff liaison to the musicians’ Artistic Advisory Committee.
·       Coordinate with VP of Marketing and Public Relations on marketing, concert titles, and performance budget goals for the symphony artistic program.
·       Lead discussions and relay artistic vision for all staff in absence of Music Director. Educate staff, including marketing, ticket office, front office staff, and other administration in artistic/historical insights, pronunciations of Artist’s names and repertoire, and other significant information to carry out and support Symphony Artistic Vision.
·       Serve as liaison between the Symphony Music Director, other constituents in the organization, and members of the community at large.
·       Participate in the design and development of education initiatives and outreach activities with the education department, opera artistic administration, and operations.
·       Work with the COO and Director of Operations in the planning and execution of all regional, national, and international touring and recording projects. Prepare and monitor all contracts, budgets, and payments for such projects.
·       Participate with rehearsal and concert duty rotation with operations department and attend rehearsals, and performances as required.
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
1.     Bachelor’s degree in Music, Music Performance, or other related degree
2.     Deep knowledge of orchestral repertoire and the field of guest conductors and artists across genres and styles.  Conceptual vision for building seasons and the interaction of repertoire to create cohesive programs.
3.     Minimum of six years’ experience in related positions.
4.     Excellent customer service, interpersonal and management skills.
5.     Effectively balance collaboration with being a self-starter.
6.     Detail-oriented, organized, able to problem solve and make critical decisions.
7.     Computer proficient with word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations.  We currently use Microsoft Office products.  Experience with field-specific databases OPAS and Tessitura a plus.
8.     Excellent editing and proofreading skills.
9.     Professional work ethic and the ability to collaborate effectively.
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
1.     Sit for long periods of time and stand occasionally
2.     Ability to twist, bend, reach, and lift up to 20 pounds
