In recognition of a generous gift from the Laffont family, the Met’s nationwide vocal competition—known since its founding in 1954 as the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions—begins a new chapter as the Metropolitan Opera Eric and Dominique Laffont Competition. Mrs. Laffont, an Advisory Director on the Met Board, has spent many hours volunteering with the auditions over the last 20 years, and she and her late husband, Eric, have long been among the program’s most dedicated supporters.

The competition is designed to discover promising young opera singers and assist in the development of their careers, and is sponsored by the Metropolitan Opera National Council, including members and hundreds of volunteers from across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Some of today’s greatest singers got their start in the auditions, including Renée Fleming, Susan Graham, Stephanie Blythe, Eric Owens, Lawrence Brownlee, Lisette Oropesa, Jamie Barton, Michael Fabiano, Anthony Roth Costanzo, Ryan Speedo Green, and Nadine Sierra.

We are dedicated to the health and safety of our audience, team and community. As such, we will be following all City of Milwaukee, State of Wisconsin and Center for Disease Control COVID-19 mitigation recommendations. Thank you for being an important part of our safe return to stage. Please check this page often for updates. You will be emailed any COVID-19 changes and reminders at least 48 hours prior to any performance.

By attending an in-person event of the Florentine Opera Company you agree to complete a self-assessment within the 24 hours prior to attendance. Your attendance is acknowledgement that you do not have meet any disqualifying criteria or exhibit any symptoms as referenced by the CDC. Please reference the COVID-19 Self Assessment found here: Take the Coronavirus Self-Checker

The health of our audience members, staff, volunteers, and artists continues to be the Florentine Opera’s highest priority (along with creating excellent performances!). We are committed to maintaining a safe environment while welcoming guests back, and appreciate your cooperation to keep us performing. Effective October, 1, 2021, we will require proof of COVID-19 vaccination or negative test within 72 hours of events for all patrons age 12 and above attending indoor performances and events. Valid ID will be required as well. Children under 12 are permitted with an adult that meets vaccination or negative testing requirements. Click here for additional information about the Milwaukee arts groups commitment. Thank you for working with us to make live performances safe for everyone.

CDC-approved masks will be required to be worn properly, according to CDC guidelines, at all times whenever indoors. Masks may not be removed when in the theater. Anyone who refuses or is unable to comply will be asked to leave. This policy will be adjusted prior to each indoor performance based on expert guidance and Milwaukee infection levels. We want to see your wonderful smiles, but we can wait! All Florentine employees will be masked and vaccinated.

We know you miss each other! We miss you, too! You will notice markings on floors whenever a line might be formed (when entering venues/scanning tickets, for example). Please do your best to avoid crowding indoors. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

Hand sanitizing stations will be readily available throughout the venue. Please use these often, especially after touching any shared surface. Please also wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before touching your face and after touching any shared surface.

Your compliance with these protocols allows us to return to stage and share artistic experiences with you all. Please note that if you have been vaccinated for COVID-19 you will still be required to follow these safety precautions. Thank you, in advance, for your support!
