The Capital District, along with Philadelphia and Maryland, is one of three districts comprising the Middle-Atlantic Region of the Met Laffont Competition. Winners of the Capital District auditions advance to the Middle-Atlantic Region competition.
The Met’s Laffont Competition—previously known as the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions—is designed to discover promising young opera singers and assist in the development of their careers and is sponsored by hundreds of donors and volunteers from across North and South America. Some of today’s greatest singers got their starts in the competition, including Jamie Barton, Stephanie Blythe, Lawrence Brownlee, Anthony Roth Costanzo, Emily D’Angelo, Michael Fabiano, Renée Fleming, Susan Graham, Ryan Speedo Green, Lisette Oropesa, Eric Owens, and Nadine Sierra.

The Capital District Competition will take place on Saturday, November 21st, 2026 from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm at St. Mark's Church located at 301 A Street SE, Washington, DC 20003. This event will be open to the public.
Winners from the District will advance to the Regional Final on Sunday, February 7, 2027, at nearby Wolf Trap, in Vienna, VA.
