The Utah District is one of 35 across North America that are part of the Metropolitan Opera Eric and Dominique Laffont Competition. Singers who advance through the Utah District will compete at the Rocky Mountain Region Competition in Denver on February 8, 2025.
The public is invited to observe the competition in person, free of admission charge. We will continue to monitor health advisories and implement measures like mask-wearing except when competing or in a private warm-up space, if advisable.
Singers who have qualified for the District Round will receive an email when registration has opened. You will be prompted to log in to your Dashboard, select a District, and pay the $30 application fee to reserve your spot.
Judges for the November 2, 2024 Utah District round are Daniel Belcher, Susanne Mentzer, and Roger Malouf. Official accompanist is Dr. Carol Anderson (Principal Coach for Utah Opera and music staff member at The Santa Fe Opera).
Competition typically runs from 11:00am - 1:00pm and 2:00pm - 4:00pm
Announcement of winners and feedback session with the judges follows directly after the judges' decisions have been made.
The Utah District round of the competition is open to the public free of admission charge.
Libby Gardner Concert Hall in David Gardner Hall Building on the University of Utah Campus. There is a light rail route (with transfer) available from the SLC international airport to within 0.5 miles to the venue. Best hotel selection in is in downtown Salt Lake--also accessible on the light rail line.
