Indiana District

The mission of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition is to discover promising young opera singers and assist in the development of their future careers.

This competition takes place throughout the United States, and the Indiana District, supported by Indiana Classical Voice, is hosted by the Indianapolis Opera each year. This premiere event has been a defining step in the careers of our greatest opera stars, and the state of Indiana has produced more winners than any other state in the country. One of the 2025 Indiana District Winners, Robert Wente, went on the be name a Grand Finals Winner and has recently joined the Lindemann Young Artist program at the Met.

Join us and witness the future of opera. The Indiana District Competition will take place on October 24, 2026 in the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center on the University of Indianapolis campus.

The competition will begin at 11 AM, breaking from 1-2 PM for lunch, and will be followed by a pause for judge deliberation around 5:20 PM. Winners will be announced by 6 PM.

The Met’s Laffont Competition—previously known as the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions—is designed to discover promising young opera singers and assist in the development of their careers and is sponsored by hundreds of donors and volunteers from across North and South America. Some of today’s greatest singers got their starts in the competition, including Jamie Barton, Stephanie Blythe, Lawrence Brownlee, Anthony Roth Costanzo, Emily D’Angelo, Michael Fabiano, Renée Fleming, Susan Graham, Ryan Speedo Green, Lisette Oropesa, Eric Owens, and Nadine Sierra.
