The Met’s Laffont Competition—previously known as the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions—is designed to discover promising young opera singers and assist in the development of their careers and is sponsored by hundreds of donors and volunteers from across North and South America. Some of today’s greatest singers got their starts in the competition, including Jamie Barton, Stephanie Blythe, Lawrence Brownlee, Anthony Roth Costanzo, Emily D’Angelo, Michael Fabiano, Renée Fleming, Susan Graham, Ryan Speedo Green, Lisette Oropesa, Eric Owens, and Nadine Sierra.
The Mexico District competition is a project of the San Miguel MetOpera Trust (SMMOT), whose mission it is to achieve international recognition for outstanding young Mexican opera singers congruent with the level of their talent.
To fulfill this mission, the Trust sponsors the District competition annually in San Miguel de Allende, GTO, MX. Mexico became a Competition District in 2018, finally making it possible for any talented Mexican singer to request an audition and to be heard by the most important decision-makers in the international opera industry.

La competencia en el Distrito México es un proyecto del San Miguel MetOpera Trust (SMMOT), cuya misión es alcanzar reconocimiento internacional para los jóvenes cantantes de ópera mexicanos destacados conforme a su nivel de talento.
Para lograr esta misión, el SMMOT patrocina anualmente el Distrito de la competencia en San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato. México se convirtió en un Distrito en el 2018, haciendo finalmente posible para cualquier cantante mexicano con talento solicitar una audición y ser escuchado por personas importantes a nivel internacional en la industria de la ópera.

Singers that have advanced to the District Round will receive a notification regarding the opening of registration. You will be prompted to log in to your Dashboard, select a District, and pay the $30 application fee to reserve your spot. Districts are limited to 25 singers and will operate on a first come, first served basis.
