“I am so grateful for competitions like this that allow a singer to get exposure as well as provide assistance for voice lessons, travel expenses, and much more.” - AMY OWENS, 2ND PLACE REGION FINALS 2015

The Laffont Competition (formerly the National Council Auditions) is organized annually with the help of volunteers across the country. The competition consists of four rounds, beginning at a local level and culminating on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera.

  1. District Auditions
  2. Region Finals
  3. Semi-Finals
  4. Laffont Grand Finals Concert

The New York District is one of forty-two across the United States, Canada and Mexico. Winners of the New York District continue on to the Eastern Region Finals.

In recognition of a generous gift from the Laffont family, the Met’s nationwide vocal competition—known since its founding in 1954 as the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions—begins a new chapter as the Metropolitan Opera Eric and Dominique Laffont Competition. Mrs. Laffont, an Advisory Director on the Met Board, has spent many hours volunteering with the auditions over the last 20 years, and she and her late husband, Eric, have long been among the program’s most dedicated supporters.

Many of the world’s foremost singers, among them Renée Fleming, Susan Graham, Thomas Hampson, Ben Heppner, Jessye Norman, Samuel Ramey, Frederica von Stade, Deborah Voigt and Dolora Zajick have received awards from the Laffont Competition. Annually, approximately 100 former auditioners appear in Metropolitan Opera productions.

How to Apply

Singers that have advanced to the District Round will receive an email on Monday, October 11th, 2021 when registration has opened. You will be prompted to log in to your Dashboard, select a District, and pay the $30 application fee to reserve your spot. Districts are limited to 22 singers and will operate on a first come, first served basis.

  • The application generally becomes available in August.
  • A $30 application fee is required to apply.
  • Read up on the eligibility requirements (including age limit and citizenship)

Do I need to sing in more than one language? How many arias will I be asked to sing?

Yes; you need to provide arias in at least two different languages. You need to submit four arias on your application, and you will be asked to sing no more than two. Your first aria is one of your choice, then if necessary, the judges will pick a second aria.

What time do I need to audition?

Once all the applications have been processed, you will receive an email with a specific time slot.

Can I change my aria selection after submitting my application?

Yes, you can change your selection up to the day of the audition. Let us know as soon as possible and we will change the info on your application. If you wish to make any changes the day of your audition, you must make the announcement of the change on stage to the judges. If you move on to the Region Finals, you will have the option to change your aria selection.

Will there be feedback given?

Feedback will be given at the end of each day, so please plan your day accordingly if you wish to receive feedback. We expect feedback to run from approximately 3.30pm to about 5pm, and will be given in the form of a 'speed feedback' session. Because of the number of applicants, you will receive feedback from one judge selected at random. These times are approximate and subject to change. No feedback will be given by phone or email.

The District Auditions will be held ad Merkin Hall on November 1. These will be closed to the public due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

District Judges 2021-2022:

  • Bill Palant

MONC Eastern Region is a volunteer based organization. As both a District and a Region, we are responsible for raising all the funds necessary to hold the District Auditions and the Region Finals. This includes rental of an audition space and pianist, as well as the prize money awarded to the winners. The Metropolitan Opera then organizes and funds the last two rounds of the competition.

We want to give our singers the best possible chances when competing, and this means holding the auditions at a concert hall like Merkin or Baruch College. We also like to provide our singers with great pianists and knowledgeable judges who can provide valuable feedback.

MONC Eastern Region is a 501(c)3, so all donations are tax-deductible up to the extent allowed by law.
